Powering Curiosity at the STEM Festival 2026

The Cerro Gordo Clean Energy District had a great time connecting with families at this year’s STEM Festival in Mason City.

Our booth focused on something simple but powerful- showing how energy is created. The highlight was our hand-crank “wheel,” where kids could generate their own electricity and watch lights turn on as they spun. It didn’t take long for the line to form.

That hands-on moment made energy real. It opened the door to conversations about how we generate power every day- especially through renewable sources like wind and solar.

We loved seeing curiosity take over as kids experimented, asked questions, and made the connection between effort and energy. Events like this are a great reminder: when learning is interactive, it sticks.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to spin the wheel, play with the solar cars, or use your own breath to make local energy with us.
